The safety light has a longer performance lifespan compared to other types of bulbs. This type of flashlight can light up any room for at least 25000 hours, that’s more than the number of hours regular light bulbs can offer. If used properly, this may not need any bulb replacement at all; conserving more money. However, battery life is also dependent on the amount of light being used, the type of battery one is using and also the number of LED lights in the flashlight. So to extend the battery’s life, use a reliable power source like the trusty lithium batteries.
The new Osram Dragon-series LED emitters use a red LED for the ESD protection diode - an interesting fact that the specification sheet dated February 16, 2007 fails to mention. Further, the specification sheet states in the Maximum Rating section that the warning light is not designed for continuous reverse operation. However, a clever application of this "feature" would be in a flashlight that provides power in the forward direction for white light and power in the reverse direction for red light. The Osram Ceramos LED emitter is another candidate for this application as are any other current or future devices that share these characteristics. Article coming soon.
If you were to take the inductor out of this circuit, then what you have is a normal flashlight. You close the switch and the bulb lights up. With the inductor in the circuit as shown, the behavior is completely different. The safety light is a resistor (the resistance creates heat to make the filament in the bulb glow). The wire in the coil has much lower resistance (it's just wire), so what you would expect when you turn on the switch is for the bulb to glow very dimly. Most of the current should follow the low-resistance path through the loop. What happens instead is that when you close the switch, the bulb burns brightly and then gets dimmer. When you open the switch, the bulb burns very brightly and then quickly goes out.

The circuit is stand alone and can be connected to the ports B and D off the AVR microcontroller. The circuit consists of three shift registers IC's 74HC595 which switches each column of the displays sequentially on and off for 3ms. PORTB controls the the 74HC595. When a column is selected, the data for the column is put on PORTD, the signals from PORTB are amplified by the ULN2003, and switches the led dot matrix's on and off. While each column is swithed on and off seqeuntially, the characters on the display are formed. The PCB contains all the parts except for the microcontroller part. The PCB has to be connected via the two 10 pin flat cable connectors to the attinyboard or the STK500 for example.
